Professor of Marketing at the Freie Universität Berlin
The advancement of scholarship in business research relies fundamentally on the development of strong theory. However, for many especially young scholars, it is often unclear what it means to develop a theory, although it builds a central element of each research project. The presentation will synthesize insights from epistemology and meta-scientific research across business disciplines to articulate what theorizing is, how it operates, and the diverse ways it can be practiced in business research.
The presentation is structured based on an integrative framework that conceptualizes theorizing along two core dimensions: theorizing activities, which capture the sub-processes involved in building theory, and theorizing styles, which describe the distinct logics, orientations, and methodological preferences that guide those activities. Together, these dimensions provide a structured understanding of how scholars can generate, refine, and connect ideas into coherent theoretical contributions.
This framework thus not only shifts attention from theory as a static end product to theorizing as a dynamic, ongoing practice central to the creation of impactful knowledge. It also offers an actionable account of theorizing that can guide researchers—especially early-career scholars—in designing and executing conceptual and empirical studies.
La lezione è aperta a tutti/e i/le dottorandi/e; sono in particolare caldamente invitati/e a partecipare i/le dottorandi/e dell’area Management di tutti i cicli.
