Why Do Workers Leave Firms? Worker Separations, Firm Effects and Social Incentives
This thesis addresses the question: why do workers leave firms? The analysis focuses on the final stage of the employment relationship, distinguishing between voluntary
separations (quits) and involuntary separations (layoffs). The first part of the work uses COB administrative data for the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna and proposes an
extension of an AKM model to estimate the probability of quits and layoffs, decomposing its variability into worker effects, firm effects, and a residual component.
The aim is to assess the relative importance of individual and firm heterogeneity, as well as the relationship between firm effects associated with quits and layoffs.
Building on the results of the first part, the second part try to model the microeconomic mechanism underlying the decision of quitting through a dynamic Public Good Game
with exit, where the public good represents a component of workplace quality. The model’s implications are finally intended to be tested through a laboratory experiment.
