Less inequality for more education; more education for greater social mobility

According to the OECD’s Education at a Glance 2018, the social role of education “is the cornerstone of individuals’ progression through life”. In contemporary societies, schooling is a fundamental resource in enabling persons to achieve the fullest opportunity to develop their abilities. In light of that, one of the fundamental values in developed countries is equality in access to education, that translates into higher social mobility.
The first aim of the present research is to analyse the presence and characteristics of inequalities in accessing education in a selection of European countries. This allows to distinguish differences in inter-generational mobility across European countries, with a particular focus on Italian areas. In the second part of the thesis, the interest is on figuring out the role of education in reducing social inequality. In particular, the focus is on preschool education, a crucial period for the accumulation of human capital because, according to recent literature, returns of early investment in education are the highest across the whole life cycle.
