MICHAEL KLEINALTEKAMP
Professor of Marketing at the Freie Universität Berlin
Theorizing is the intellectual process of constructing, interpreting or refining conceptual frameworks or models that describe and explain phenomena. Accordingly, theorizing is an essential part of any research project. It encompasses all processes within theory development that manifests in a set of statements that identify and define relevant concepts (foundational premises) and/or specify the relationships between these concepts (research propositions) as well as the empirically testable effects between the relevant empirical variables (hypotheses). Accordingly, theorizing is a central activity in the various steps of theory development and construction that comprises (1) deriving basic assumptions either deductively from ontological assumptions or inductively from empirical observations, (2) deriving research propositions either deductively from existing theories or inductively from empirical observations, (3) developing constructs from concepts, and (4) deriving hypotheses from research propositions.
In the seminar, the various steps of theorizing will be characterized and explained. This will lay the foundation for a workshop that shall support especially 1st and 2nd year PhD students to position their research projects. For this purpose, students shall be able to answer the following questions with regard to their doctoral projects:
- Which guidelines do you use to perform the theorizing activities that are relevant within your project?
What is your field of interest or which phenomenon are you interested in?
Why are you interested in this field/phenomenon?
Which activities of theorizing are important within your project and how do you plan to perform them?
La lezione è aperta a tutti/e i dottorandi ma obbligatoria per i/le dottorandi/e dell’area di Management del 39° e 40° ciclo
Il seminario si svolgerà in inglese e in presenza presso i locali della Fondazione Marco Biagi.
